Bound A YA Urban Fantasy Novel Volume 1 of the Dark Reflections Books eBook Dean Murray

I admit I was hesitant to read this "Dark Reflections" series. I didn't want an alternate timeline but I wanted to keep reading about the characters I had already invested in through the "Reflections" series so I read it anyway. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the politics of pack life, the hierarchy of dominants and submissives, and the secrets that just about everyone seems to be keeping. This isn't "alternate" as in "throw away" or "filler." Bound enhances the Reflections series by allowing the reader to get a more comprehensive look at the characters from the other series (at the time of posting this review the first book in the Reflections series, Broken, is free on Amazon with the parallel book, Torn, free through the author's website). The world Dean Murray creates with words is vastly complex and engaging. I cannot wait to read the next installment!

Bound A YA Urban Fantasy Novel Volume 1 of the Dark Reflections Books eBook Dean Murray Reviews

The story was ok. I bought the series, but ended up not being impressed at all. And there is another version of the story...don't regret reading, but I do regret getting all of the books. I think this is one of the few series that I don't look forward to the next book.
The book had unique spin on wolves vs. hybrids and did a great job of character development. However, I found that it took too long to get to the plot and I forced myself to continue to read and was not disappointed. From the time Alec and his friends get sent to the border, the book is filled with action. It was great writing, but I just wished that it hasn't taken the author so long to get to the plot.
I downloaded Bound as a free novel from . Wow! This could have easily been 'just another werewolf book', but Dean took this too the next level with excellent world-building, riveting characters, and tension-filled delivery. I had a hard time putting this book down and will eagerly read more of the series. Great writing and intricately-layered plots-within-plots to keep the reader on the edge of his/her seat. Highly recommend this read for urban fantasy lovers.
Kaleb leads the largest wolf pack in North America and is determined to hold power. Brandon is one of his most lethal fighters. Alec and Brandon are suppose to have some extraordinary power. But Alec's power has yet to manifest and as Kaleb's son that is underwhelming. Alec and his friends find out some truths that change everything and will lead to more than one power play for control. The book held my interest but seemed over explained in some areas making it a little long winded.
I read the Reflections Series first so switching over to the parallel universe was hard, especially since I went straight from the last book currently out in the Reflections Series and directly into Bound.

In less than an entire chapter, I hated Kaleb with a passion I never feel for people and rarely for a character in a book. He'd died a long time ago at the start of the Reflections Series and he was loved and admired for his goals and ambitions before he died. But he lived when this book began, he was able to fulfill his goals and it changed my perspective on what he was like. Actually this entire parallel made me see a lot of characters in a new light. Alec didn't start out quite the same because his background leading up to the start of this story wasn't shattered by his father's death.

You get so many different impressions and visions of characters in this series than you do in the other one and they compliment each other so well. So the one thing I learned from this parallel series is the butterfly effect...one small change in your past can catapult you into an entirely different present. And it might not be what you expect.
A war is about to be waged in the oldest of oldest ways. Good vs Evil. You have your good shifters and your bad ones but who will win the war?

Alec Graves is tired of being treated second best by the bully Brandon and his lackey Vincent. But it seems his father doesn't care about him. Only if his power that's supposedly great will be of use to him and the pack. When he gets sent out into the field. He realizes just how mad and depraved of anything redeemable his dad really is. But what's going on behind his back at home will be the ball buster that will get him up and running against odds, that are not stacked in his favor. Will him and his small splintered pack survive?
This story started like any book does; the place, time, location, and people are identified. Then it's off to non-stop action in different locations, new people are introduced, and more information is gained by Alec and the reader. It never stopped, but got deeper and deeper with each turn of the page. Just about when the reader gets settled in another situation comes up, this time with Rachel, Alecs' sister. It changes everything and the resultant actions lead the story into an unanticipated direction. I turned the page and it was the last. Big bummer! Love this series and going to open the next book when done telling you about this one. It's hard to write a review for a book this good without saying anything that might spoil it for readers. The writing is excellent, the story is gripping, and the suspense is high. If you haven't read anything by Dean Murray this is as good as it gets. Yes, there is violence, but done in a way that doesn't sicken one. There is usually some romance, too, although not much in this book. Again it is done as romance, but is not sexually exploitive or raunchy. This is reading for young adults as well as adults. Mr. Murray has life lessons embedded in all his books in this series. I would not mind if my children had read them. I have suggested them to my grandchildren and I'm a prude when it comes to explicit sex in a book. It all boils down to this a great series and this book was great!

I didn't want an alternate timeline but I wanted to keep reading about the characters I had already invested in through the "Reflections" series so I read it anyway.
